Lebanon Faces Pressure from US to Rethink Israel Boycott Policy Ahead of Talks

A new round of US‑backed diplomacy between Lebanon and Israel is set to take place in Washington this week, and Washington is expected to push Beirut to reconsider its law criminalizing contact with Israel.

The legislation, known as Lebanon’s “Boycott Israel” law, bans individuals and companies from any dealings with Israeli entities. Violators face up to 10 years in prison with hard labor.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has designated diplomat Simon Karam to lead his country’s delegation, while Israel will be represented by its ambassador to Washington, Yechiel Leiter. Aoun stressed that the talks are a strategic choice, not a concession. The goal: a ceasefire, an end to Israel’s presence in southern Lebanon, and the deployment of the Lebanese army along the internationally recognized border.
