Ongoing Efforts to Facilitate US–Iran Talks: Pakistan Plays a Key Role
  • PublishedApril 7, 2026

Pakistan has emerged as the critical diplomatic intermediary in ongoing efforts to broker negotiations between the US and Iran, even as military tensions escalate and Trump’s ultimatum deadline approaches.

Pakistan’s Mediation Role

Pakistani officials have positioned their country at the center of recent talks, serving as the primary go-between for proposals exchanged by both Washington and Tehran. Despite weeks of shuttle diplomacy, Pakistani sources told Reuters that no consensus has emerged yet.

“We are in touch with Iranians. They have lately shown flexibility that they could join the talks, but they are at the same time taking hard lines as a prerequisite for any negotiations,” a senior Pakistani security official said. Islamabad continues persuading Tehran to enter discussions without preconditions.

Time Running Short

The window for dialogue is narrowing. One Pakistani source warned that the next three to four hours were critical for the future of negotiations, with Trump’s threatened strikes looming as an imminent deadline.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson confirmed that messages continue flowing through mediators, but substantive movement remains elusive.

Iranian Conditions Threaten Progress

Tehran rejected a temporary ceasefire proposal conveyed by intermediaries, insisting instead on conditions that include an end to US and Israeli strikes, guarantees against future attacks, and compensation for damages before any lasting peace discussions can begin.

These demands represent a significant gap from current positions held by Washington and its allies.

Saudi-Pakistan Defense Alignment

Pakistani security officials warned that Iranian strikes on Saudi Arabia risk derailing negotiations entirely. They stressed that under their defense pact, Pakistan stands ready to support the Kingdom if conflict escalates further.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke by phone Tuesday to coordinate their countries’ response to the crisis.

Diplomatic Urgency

As military operations intensify, Pakistan’s delicate mediation efforts face mounting pressure. The coming hours will prove decisive in determining whether diplomatic channels remain open or whether escalation becomes inevitable.
