JEDDAH — Hussain Al‑Sadah and Sahar Al‑Omair see beauty where most people see junk. Working from their home studio in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, the husband‑and‑wife duo transforms nails, pushpins, coffee beans, and rusted metal sheets into intricate works of art.

“Each individual pushpin, nail, or bead might seem unremarkable on its own, but when thousands are thoughtfully arranged together, they transform into something magnificent,” Al‑Omair told Arab News.

One of their most ambitious pieces used 13,000 discarded coffee beans. To get the right tones, the couple bought a small roastery and spent two months roasting beans into nine different shades — treating the process like mixing paint. Light roasts became warm beige and soft brown; darker roasts created deep shadows and contrast.

Their large‑scale nail works involve more than 100,000 nails. Al‑Sadah calculates dimensions, weight distribution, and structural load before any hammer hits metal. “Not knowing where to start… I feel that hardship was a blessing because it led me to experiment,” he said.

The artists draw inspiration from the Qatif region’s oasis landscapes and agricultural heritage much of which is disappearing. Their upcoming exhibition uses rust gathered from corrugated zinc sheets that once covered the remains of a 2,000‑year‑old spring.

Neither has formal art training. That independence, they say, pushed them to experiment without established frameworks. Since marrying in 2022, they have produced 20–30 collaborative works, often hosting collectors in their home studio where visitors witness fragments of the creative process.

“Even if the work travels internationally, the more deeply rooted the work is in our own environment, the more universally people seem to connect with it,” Al‑Sadah said.
