Devastating Nepal Floods Leave 903 Dead, 4,247 Missing
Devastating floods near the China border have killed at least 903 people in Nepal, with the number of missing rising sharply to 4,247, according to the country’s disaster authority. Rescue efforts entered their sixth day on Monday as the scale of the disaster continued to unfold.
Chinese state media earlier confirmed 16 deaths and 546 people missing in Tibet following Wednesday’s disaster, bringing the combined regional toll to 919 dead and 4,793 missing.
Nepal’s list of missing individuals includes 592 foreigners, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. It also includes 933 workers from hydropower projects situated along the river that the floodwaters tore through.
In its Monday morning update, Nepal’s disaster agency listed 3,655 missing citizens. The figures show a sharp increase in Nuwakot district, where the number of missing jumped to 1,158, up from 115 reported just a day earlier. An additional 562 people remain unaccounted for in Rasuwa district. Among the missing are 45 Nepali army soldiers, 38 police and armed police officers, and 19 customs and immigration officers.
In neighboring India, authorities in Uttar Pradesh state said they had recovered 17 bodies from rivers flowing from Nepal, believed to be flood victims. Indian authorities are working to identify the bodies, which have not yet been included in the official death toll.
