Six Flags Shuts Down 9 Coasters After Rider Dies in Gruesome Autumn

The theme park chain is temporarily closing down nine more coasters at six locations after a passenger died after apparently falling out of a ride at Six Flags Over Georgia on Monday.

Details of the tragedy have not been officially confirmed, but local media sources suggest a passenger fell, or was thrown, off the 200-foot, 70-mph Goliath coaster.

Witnesses told Atlanta NBC affiliate 11Alive that the rider hit the coaster multiple times as he fell, calling it a “gruesome scene. One ride even claimed the falling man was captured in their souvenir picture that is automatically snapped and sold in the attraction’s gift store. “He was in our photos,” the witness added. “When he fell, he hit the car three times. Police said many other riders were also injured. Two riders claimed workers checked their safety belts before the ride started, as protocol requires.

In a statement to the Associated Press, a Six Flags representative said, Out of an abundance of caution, we have temporarily closed similar attractions across our parks. “Safety of our guests and team members is one of our top priorities,” the company said.Nine more rides modelled after the Georgia park’s Goliath have been temporarily taken down, including Goliath at Magic Mountain in Valencia, Calif., Nitro at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey and Orion and Diamondback at Kings Island in Ohio.
