US Pres Trump is Going to the Philippines in Nov for ASEAN Summit
The ASEAN Summit is slated for November 15-17, and the APEC Summit in China is set for November 18-19. Marcos has proclaimed November 16-18 as special non-working days in the National Capital Region for the ASEAN conference.
Marcos and Trump last met face-to-face at the White House in July last year to discuss bilateral ties, defence cooperation and commerce. The two sides also held telephone talks on economic development and security concerns in the region including the South China Sea on July 23 this year.
Trump visited the Philippines for the first time in November 2017, during his first year in office, attending the ASEAN 50th anniversary banquet and holding a brief meeting with former president Rodrigo Duterte in Manila.
Philipino activists said they are ready for Trump in Manila 2.0. On Wednesday, Renato Reyes Jr, president of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan, a left-wing, multi-sectoral political alliance in the Philippines, said in a Facebook post: “Trump’s image and effigy will burn in the streets of Manila the moment he steps foot on Philippine soil. The main fascist and imperialist will get the warm greeting he deserves. There was no red-carpet greeting, only red banners of protest against the warrior who threw the globe into further trouble.
Activists are also resisting the US-led Pax Silica to source semiconductors and rare earth metals. The Philippines has set aside a 1,620-hectare property in New Clark City in the northern province of Tarlac, north of Manila, for a manufacturing cluster to produce high-end components for use in artificial intelligence data centers.
