Jeddah Volunteers Take Action to Preserve Red Sea Marine Ecosystem

Community volunteers, divers and environmental groups are back in Jeddah for the sixth edition of the “Keep an Eye on the Sea” campaign, a conservation drive aimed at protecting beaches and marine habitats along the city’s coastline while raising public awareness about preserving the Kingdom’s coastal ecosystems.

The campaign runs through September 26, overlapping with Saudi National Day celebrations on September 23, and brings together volunteers and divers to clear waste from beaches and the seabed across Jeddah’s coast. Alongside the cleanup work, an educational pavilion at Roshn Waterfront is hosting awareness programs and interactive activities designed to introduce the public to the marine environment and ways to protect it, including a hands-on workshop for children exploring the importance of coral reefs in supporting marine biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance, along with an interactive simulation introducing younger participants to the concept of marine aquaculture.

Authorities in the Makkah region said last year’s fifth edition drew more than 1,000 volunteers and divers, who cleaned up shores along Salman Bay and Al-Budai beaches and carried out seabed-cleaning operations off South Obhur beach in partnership with local organizations and private-sector partners. The initiative is built around a few core goals: reducing pollutants that threaten marine ecosystems, encouraging environmentally responsible behavior, and building a stronger culture of volunteerism in the community.

The campaign was launched by the Jeddah Governorate Volunteering and Community Partnership Program, known locally as Lenobadir, or “Let Us Take the Initiative,” in partnership with government agencies and private-sector organizations. Organizers say they hope the effort will improve the local urban environment and quality of life while reinforcing collective action to protect marine resources and support their long-term sustainability.
