Muslim World League Leader Honors Victims at Christchurch Mosque Site
LONDON — Sheikh Mohammed Al-Issa, secretary-general of the Muslim World League, visited Al-Noor Mosque in Christchurch on Monday, the site of the 2019 mass shooting that claimed 51 lives during Friday prayers.
Al-Issa, who also chairs the Organization of Muslim Scholars, met survivors and families of the victims at the mosque, which was targeted along with the nearby Linwood Islamic Center in the same attack. He affirmed the league’s commitment to combating hateful ideologies worldwide and promoting tolerance, coexistence, and social cohesion.
Mosque officials highlighted the need for reconstruction work due to growing numbers of worshippers, along with a lecture and dialogue hall. Al-Issa promised to help meet these requirements once legal procedures are completed.
The previous day, Al-Issa visited the first phase of an Islamic Center under development in Auckland and took part in a ceremony to plant an “Olive Tree of Peace” at the site. He also visited Jamia Masjid Al-Mustaf, New Zealand’s largest mosque, where he met with officials and students enrolled in the Holy Qur’an memorization program.
On Friday, Al-Issa officially opened Al-Rahman Mosque in Auckland and delivered its first sermon.
