BERLIN — All train services in Germany ground to a halt on Tuesday evening after a breakdown in the railway radio communication systems, national rail operator Deutsche Bahn said.

“Our technicians are working flat out to resolve this disruption,” Deutsche Bahn said on its website, without specifying how long the outage would last.

The disruption affected municipal, regional, and long‑distance trains across the country. In the north, trains were “completely at a standstill,” private regional operator Metronom said. The company urged customers not to undertake any more train journeys and to seek alternative transport.

In North Rhine‑Westphalia, traffic was completely suspended, state police said.

Germany has been working to modernize its aging rail network with massive public investment after decades of underinvestment that have led to frequent delays. The scale of Tuesday’s disruption highlights the vulnerability of the system. Metronom, which operates regional lines around Hamburg, Bremen, and Hanover, carries more than 120,000 passengers daily. There was no immediate indication of when services would resume.
