COLOMBO — Three Finnish cave divers have arrived in the Maldives to help recover the bodies of four Italian scuba divers who died in an underwater cave accident in Vaavu Atoll.

The Italian divers had been exploring caves at a depth of 50 meters on Thursday, according to DAN Europe. One body was recovered on Friday from about 60 meters deep inside a cave structure. The remaining three are believed to be inside the same 200‑foot‑long cave.

A Maldivian military diver, Sergeant‑major Mohamed Mahudhee, died Saturday from decompression illness during the search effort, prompting a temporary suspension. Rough weather and sea conditions have complicated the recovery.

The Finnish team—Sami Paakkarinen, Jenni Westerlund, and Patrik Grönqvist—will work alongside local authorities.
