Republicans Face Backlash Over Hearings Targeting Muslim American Groups
WASHINGTON — Muslim American groups are condemning recent congressional hearings led by Republicans, which they say weaponize government to stoke fear against Muslim minorities.
A House Judiciary subcommittee held a hearing Wednesday titled “Sharia‑Free America: Why Political Islam and Sharia Law are Incompatible with the US Constitution.” A similar hearing took place in February. Critics argue the sessions single out Muslims for ridicule, revive conspiracy theories, and ignore that US law already prevails.
“Anti‑Sharia hearings are not about protecting the Constitution. They are about demonizing Islam and portraying Muslim Americans as perpetual outsiders,” said Zainab Chaudry of the Council on American‑Islamic Relations.
CAIR recorded 8,683 anti‑Muslim and anti‑Arab complaints in 2025, the highest since 1996. A recent study found anti‑Muslim bigotry by Republican elected officials has surged since early 2025, citing over 1,100 online posts.
Republican Representative Chip Roy defended the hearings, arguing that “radicals pushing political Islam” want to replace America’s culture. Democrats called the hearings a distraction and an attack on religious liberty.
