Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer held key discussions in Jeddah on Wednesday, reaffirming the two nations’ commitment to deepening their strategic partnership and addressing regional security challenges.

The Meeting

Starmer was received at Jeddah airport by Makkah Region Governor Prince Saud bin Mishaal bin Abdulaziz, with ambassadors from both countries present. The high-level reception underscored the significance of the visit.

During their meeting, the two leaders reviewed bilateral relations and explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation across various sectors. They also examined the latest regional and international developments, focusing on their security and economic implications.

Both sides affirmed their commitment to bolstering regional security and stability through coordinated efforts.

Ceasefire and Strait of Hormuz

Starmer welcomed the Iran-US ceasefire announced earlier this week, describing it as a positive step toward de-escalation. However, he cautioned that substantial work remains to ensure the agreement becomes permanent.

“There is still a lot of work to do to make sure that the agreement becomes permanent,” Starmer said, according to Reuters.

He also highlighted concerns about the Strait of Hormuz, the critical waterway that remains central to global energy security. “But also a lot of work to do in relation to the Strait of Hormuz, which has an impact everywhere across the world,” he noted.

The Strait’s reopening and securing unimpeded passage remains essential for stabilizing global energy supplies and international commerce.

Mutual Interests

Beyond the ceasefire and maritime issues, both leaders discussed matters of shared concern, reflecting the breadth of the Saudi-British relationship. The discussions encompassed economic partnerships, defense cooperation, and coordinated approaches to regional challenges.

The visit demonstrates Britain’s continued engagement with Saudi Arabia as a key strategic ally in the Middle East, particularly as the region navigates ongoing tensions and seeks pathways toward greater stability.
