Saudi Defense Chief Calls for Global Support as Iranian Strikes Increase
Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman held phone calls with defense ministers from Turkey, Romania, and South Korea on Thursday. The calls sought global support as Iranian attacks on Gulf facilities escalated.
Fresh Drone Attacks on Saudi Territory
After a brief pause Wednesday, Iranian drones resumed attacks at 9 p.m., targeting the Eastern Province and the Shaybah oil field. All drones were intercepted by Saudi air defenses, the Ministry of Defense confirmed.
Missiles aimed at Prince Sultan Air Base in Al-Kharj were also shot down. The resumed attacks demonstrated Iran’s commitment to sustained pressure despite previous interceptions.
International Defense Coordination
Prince Khalid spoke with Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler about joint security measures. The call reaffirmed commitment to regional defense cooperation and condemned Iranian aggression.
The Saudi minister also called Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruta to discuss regional threats to global stability. South Korea’s Ahn Gyu-back received a separate call focusing on condemning Iran’s actions.
Strategic Messaging
The multiple calls represent an effort to build international coalition against Iranian actions. Saudi Arabia seeks to position itself as defending regional stability against Iranian escalation.
The defense chief emphasized common concerns about regional threats. The diplomatic engagement aims to secure support and demonstrate international alignment on the issue.
Historical Context
The crisis began February 28 when US and Israeli forces struck Iran. Tehran has since targeted Gulf states and US-Israeli assets across the region in retaliation.
The escalation followed the appointment of Iran’s new supreme leader. Both sides appear committed to sustained military operations.
Energy Blockade Threatens Global Markets
Iran has declared a blockade on energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. The critical chokepoint for global oil and gas flows faces unprecedented restrictions.
Commodity prices have surged in response to the blockade threat. Global economies face inflationary pressure from reduced energy availability and higher prices.
