Saudi Crown Prince Extends Warm Wishes to Bangladesh’s New Leader

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has sent congratulations to Tarique Rahman following his swearing-in as Bangladesh’s new prime minister, in a message reflecting the Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening ties with the South Asian nation.

The crown prince also congratulated Rahman on the formation of a new government under his leadership, the Saudi Press Agency reported early Wednesday. Prince Mohammed expressed wishes for “continued progress and prosperity” for both Rahman and the Bangladeshi people.

A New Era for Bangladesh

Rahman, chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was sworn in as prime minister on Tuesday in a ceremony at the South Plaza of the parliament building in Dhaka. The oath followed his party’s sweeping victory in recent parliamentary elections, which returned the BNP to power after years in opposition.

At sixty years old, Rahman carries a significant political legacy. He is the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and the late President Ziaur Rahman, who was assassinated in 1981. His family’s political dynasty has shaped Bangladesh’s trajectory for decades, and his return to leadership marks a new chapter in the country’s democratic evolution.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

The crown prince’s message underscores the importance Saudi Arabia places on its relationship with Bangladesh. The two countries have maintained diplomatic ties for decades, with cooperation spanning trade, investment, and labor migration. Hundreds of thousands of Bangladeshi workers are employed in the Kingdom, contributing to both economies.

Rahman’s government is expected to seek continued engagement with Gulf partners as it addresses domestic challenges including economic development, infrastructure investment, and regional stability.

A Consistent Saudi Approach

The congratulatory message follows a pattern of Saudi engagement with newly formed governments across Asia and the Middle East. The Kingdom has increasingly positioned itself as a diplomatic actor extending beyond its immediate neighborhood, building relationships with nations that matter for trade, investment, and strategic partnership.

For Bangladesh, the warm wishes from Riyadh signal continuity in a relationship that has benefited both countries. For Saudi Arabia, they represent another step in building connections with one of the world’s most populous Muslim nations.

As Rahman’s government begins its work, the message from Crown Prince Mohammed serves as both diplomatic courtesy and a foundation for future cooperation. The words are warm. The intent behind them is strategic.
