Libya Oil Complex Targeted in Drone Attacks as Fires Are Contained
ZAWIYAH, Libya — Libya’s National Oil Corporation said Tuesday evening that all fires sparked by drone attacks on the country’s second-largest oil refinery had been contained.
On Monday night, a large gasoline reservoir at the Zawiya refinery west of Tripoli caught fire and collapsed after being struck by a drone, according to Hamdi Al-Bishti, head of the Brega Oil Company that runs the facility. A second drone fell near another tank without causing casualties, while the NOC said a third drone targeted the complex but caused no damage.
The refinery, with a capacity of 120,000 barrels per day, holds significant amounts of diesel, kerosene, gasoline, and liquefied petroleum gas intended to fuel power stations in western Libya.
It remains unclear who is behind the attacks. The Tripoli-based government condemned the strikes as “an escalation that will not go unpunished,” with Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah calling it a direct threat to lives, workers, and vital infrastructure.
The attacks came days after similar drone strikes targeted a naphtha reservoir and a water desalination plant over the weekend. Libya has Africa’s most abundant oil reserves but has been beset by violence and instability since the overthrow of Muammar Qaddafi in 2011, with two rival governments currently vying for power.
