Germany: 3 Indian Students Die in Fire, Resident Charged for Homicide

Three Indian nationals, two women and a man, who were studying in Germany, have died in a fire incident in Bochum, North Rhine-Westphalia, the Indian Embassy in Berlin said, adding that it is in contact with local authorities and the bereaved families to extend all necessary assistance.

In a post on X on Wednesday (local time), the embassy stated that three Indian nationals (two women and one man) have died tragically in a fire in Bochum, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. All three were studying in Germany.

The Embassy of India in Berlin and the Consulate General of India in Frankfurt are in touch with local authorities and bereaved families and are providing all essential assistance. The German authorities are investigating the event. “We extend our deepest condolences to the grieving families at this moment of sorrow,” the embassy said. German police have provisionally arrested a 41-year-old inhabitant of the apartment block in connection with the incident, Anadolu news agency reported.

The victims were identified as two women, 25 and 27 years old, and a guy, 26, all Indian nationals. Police and prosecutors said Wednesday that exhaustive investigations, including a fire expert’s assessment, ruled out a technical deficiency as the cause of the fire, shifting suspicion to the 41-year-old resident.

The suspect has already been interrogated by homicide investigators, and further investigations are underway under the auspices of the Bochum prosecutor’s office.
