Dominican Republic Takes Action Against Nine Cuban Embassy Officials
SANTO DOMINGO — The Dominican Republic has asked Cuba to withdraw nine embassy staff, giving them seven days to leave, the foreign ministry announced Thursday.
The ministry did not explain the decision but insisted it complies with international law, specifically the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations. The Dominican government, led by President Luis Abinader, is allied with the United States, which is pressing for regime change in communist Cuba.
Cuban Ambassador Angel Arzuaga said the ministry did not warn him in advance about the request.
The decision came as Cuba celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of revolutionary leader Fidel Castro. In December, the Dominican Republic excluded Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua from a summit in Punta Cana, prompting complaints from Mexico and Colombia and leading to the meeting being postponed.
