India Reopens Tourist Visas for Bangladesh: Latest Updates and Travel Guidelines

DHAKA — India will resume issuing tourist visas for Bangladeshi citizens starting June 28, nearly two years after relations between the neighbours soured following the overthrow of New Delhi’s ally Sheikh Hasina, India’s new high commissioner to Bangladesh announced Thursday.

“We hope this will further strengthen people-to-people ties between our two sovereign nations,” Dinesh Trivedi told reporters in Dhaka.

The decision marks a further easing of tensions. Relations had been strained since the August 2024 uprising that forced Hasina to flee to India, where she remains in hiding. Bangladesh has repeatedly sought her extradition. However, ties improved after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman won a landslide election victory, taking over from the interim administration that led the country of 170 million people.

India had previously resumed issuing medical visas, and the tourist visa restart is seen as a significant step toward normalising cross-border travel. India earlier resumed issuing visas for medical purposes. The two countries share a 4,096-kilometre land border and have deep cultural and historical ties, though relations remain delicate.

The new visa policy is expected to boost tourism, business travel, and family visits between the two nations. Travelers should check with the Indian High Commission or official visa centres for updated application procedures, documentation requirements, and any additional health or safety protocols before planning their journeys. The resumption will be closely watched as a barometer of broader bilateral ties.
