Ramy Youssef Joins Elmo to Celebrate Arab American Heritage Month
Comedian and actor Ramy Youssef recently stopped by “Sesame Street” to help celebrate Arab American Heritage Month, and the beloved red monster Elmo was an eager student.
In a short clip shared by the show, Youssef introduced young viewers to common Arabic words. He started with “salam alaykum,” explaining that “salam” means peace—a greeting used widely across Arabic-speaking communities. Then came “habibi,” a term he described as something you call a “special friend.”
The Egyptian American star didn’t hide his pride. “I’m so proud of my Arab heritage,” Youssef said, “and I’m so happy to share this month with my fellow Arabs and Elmo. So, thanks habibi.”
Sesame Street’s official TikTok account posted the video with the caption: “The word of the day is HABIBI! Happy #ArabAmericanHeritageMonth from Ramy Youssef, Elmo, and all of your friends on Sesame Street!”
The children’s program has a long history of marking cultural occasions and highlighting diverse communities. Arabic-language adaptations of the show have also introduced regional culture and language to younger audiences around the world.
