NEW YORK: The United Kingdom severely denounced Israel’s humanitarian conduct in Gaza during a high-level UN Security Council debate on the Middle East peace process on Wednesday, branding the Israeli assistance system as “inhumane, ineffective, dangerous, and fueling instability.”

Speaking at the council’s open discussion, UK Ambassador to the UN Barbara Woodward advocated for an urgent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, stating that the suffering of Palestinian people and Hamas’ prolonged hostage holding since October 7 “must end now.

She stated, “The IDF shoots at desperate Palestinian civilians almost every day.” “Hamas is taking advantage of this disorder.”

She urged Israel to halt such assaults, hold criminals accountable, and collaborate with the UN to establish a more effective relief distribution system in accordance with international humanitarian law. Woodward underlined the UK’s support for the UN’s humanitarian coordination office while condemning recent attacks on the World Health Organization in Deir Al-Balah.

The envoy also slammed Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz’s intentions to forcefully relocate Palestinians to Rafah and blasted settlement development in the West Bank, describing it as a “flagrant breach of international law” and “an accelerating campaign to prevent a Palestinian state.
