UK Asylum Center Ex-Detainees File a Claim Against the Government
LONDON: After learning that a UK facility was dangerously overcrowded and experiencing infectious illness outbreaks, at least 250 asylum-seekers are suing the government for wrongful detention.
According to The Guardian on Monday, a union official previously called the Home Office’s Manston Asylum Center in Kent, which handles those who have crossed the English Channel in small boats, a “humanitarian crisis on British soil. After witnessing the conditions at Manston, former independent chief inspector of borders and immigration David Neal stated he was “rendered speechless.”
Following a warning from union workers at the location, Andy Baxter, a senior Prison Officers’ Association official, also denounced the conditions there. After touring Manston, which he stated was “in crisis,” he said it looked a lot like a refugee camp in an insecure country.
Even though the Home Office had planned to move asylum-seekers to more permanent lodgings, marquees that were supposed to be used for hours upon arrival have been in use for almost a month. He stated that many used pieces of cardboard to sleep on the ground.
Manston also experienced epidemics of scabies and diphtheria, with one man dying from the former, which is uncommon in the UK because of vaccination. Kent Police also looked into allegations that asylum-seekers had been beaten by facility security.
