Turkiye Arrests 115 Suspected Daesh Members to Strengthen National Security
In a major pre-emptive security operation, Turkish authorities have arrested 115 alleged members of the Daesh militant group, suspecting them of planning attacks during the year-end holiday season. The announcement from Istanbul’s prosecutor general on Thursday underscores Turkiye’s ongoing vigilance against terrorist threats, particularly during periods of high public gatherings.
The operation targeted a total of 137 individuals based on specific intelligence. Authorities stated the arrests were made “following intelligence indicating that the Daesh terrorist organization was planning attacks during Christmas and New Year celebrations.” So far, 115 of those suspects have been successfully detained in the sweeping nationwide crackdown.

Turkiye’s geographic position places it on the front lines of regional security challenges. The nation shares an extensive 900-kilometer border with Syria, where various militant factions, including remnants of Daesh, remain active. The threat was recently highlighted internationally when Washington blamed a lone Daesh gunman for a December 13 attack in Palmyra, Syria, which killed two U.S. soldiers and an American civilian. This incident served as a stark reminder of the group’s persistent capacity for violence.

The domestic arrests coincided with a significant overseas operation by Turkiye’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT). This week, MIT conducted a cross-border mission in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region, capturing a Turkish national identified as Mehmet Goren.
Turkish intelligence alleges that Goren held a senior leadership role within Daesh and was actively organizing suicide attacks targeting civilians across multiple theaters, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkiye, and Europe. Following his capture, he was transferred to Turkiye to face justice.
