Syria, Russia Discuss Plans to Expand Military Ties
In a significant meeting underscoring enduring strategic ties, Syria’s Chief of General Staff, Major General Ali Al-Naasan, held talks in Damascus with a high-level Russian military delegation led by Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov.
The discussions, focused on military issues and bilateral cooperation, signal a continued and potentially expanding partnership between Damascus and Moscow. According to Syria’s Defense Ministry, the visit aims to “develop military cooperation that serves the common interests of both countries.”
A Long-Standing Strategic Alliance
This latest high-level engagement is part of a consistent pattern. The relationship, forged in the crucible of Syria’s long conflict, remains a cornerstone of both nations’ foreign policy. Russia’s decisive military intervention in 2015 was pivotal in reversing territorial gains by rebel forces, solidifying its role as the key external power behind the former Assad regime.
Even following the political transition and the establishment of the new administration under President Ahmad Al-Sharaa, maintaining close links with Russia has been a clear priority. Syrian officials, including President Al-Sharaa himself, have met repeatedly with Russian counterparts, including President Vladimir Putin, to ensure continuity in this vital relationship.
Consolidating Influence and Interests
The talks follow a series of similar consultations, including a meeting in Moscow last June between senior Syrian defense, foreign affairs, and intelligence officials and Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov. This rhythm of dialogue points toward a coordinated effort to solidify plans, potentially involving military support, training, and strategic coordination.
For Russia, Syria represents a critical foothold in the Middle East and a demonstration of its capacity to project power and shape regional outcomes. For the Syrian administration, Russian partnership offers a guarantor of security and a key ally in a complex geopolitical landscape.
As Deputy Minister Yevkurov continues his multi-day visit, the discussions will likely focus on translating this long-standing alliance into concrete, forward-looking military agreements. The meeting reaffirms that, despite changes in Damascus, the strategic axis with Moscow remains a central feature of Syria’s posture, with both nations actively working to adapt and strengthen their military collaboration for the future.
