How Rainfall Is Reviving Historic Wells in Northern Borders

RAFHA — Recent rainfall has breathed new life into the Northern Borders region, transforming the Qalban Al-Duwaid depression into a striking aquatic landscape and refilling historic wells that have served local communities for generations.

The downpours have highlighted the desert’s seasonal vitality, turning dry basins into temporary lakes and replenishing groundwater sources across the area. More than 250 wells, arranged in a distinctive circular pattern, have been documented by the Saudi Press Agency. The layout reflects traditional methods developed to adapt to the harsh desert environment and secure reliable water supplies.

The wells are not merely historical curiosities. They remain essential resources in a region where water is scarce and seasonal rains can make the difference between drought and survival. Their circular arrangement is believed to help with water collection and distribution, an innovation born from centuries of living in one of the world’s driest climates.

To protect this heritage and ensure the wells remain usable, the regional branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has launched a preservation project. Work includes cataloging and monitoring each well, installing secure covers, and adding reinforced concrete structures over the openings. These measures guard against contamination and prevent accidents, while keeping the water clean for those who depend on it.

Officials say the project aims to protect visitors from falls or injuries while preserving the wells as sustainable and essential water resources for the long term. As rainfall becomes more unpredictable, safeguarding such traditional infrastructure has taken on new urgency.

For now, locals and visitors alike are witnessing a rare sight: the desert blooming, the depressions filled, and the old wells holding fresh water once again.
