The Reality Behind Palestinians Self-Demolishing Homes South of Jerusalem

Two Palestinian families have demolished their own homes in Jerusalem’s Silwan neighborhood under Israeli demolition orders, continuing a pattern of displacement affecting hundreds of Palestinians in the area.

The Demolition

Brothers Nader and Hatem Baydoun were compelled by Israeli authorities to self-demolish their two houses in the Al-Bustan area of Silwan on Tuesday. The demolition was ordered due to construction without permits. The families faced threats of fines and potential imprisonment if they refused to comply.

The two homes, totaling approximately 88 square meters, had housed 10 people since their construction in 1998.

Escalating Demolitions

This demolition is part of a broader pattern. Since February, Israeli authorities have demolished 53 homes and conducted land-clearing operations in communities including Silwan, Al-Bustan, and Batn Al-Hawa—neighborhoods located near occupied East Jerusalem’s walled Old City.

Silwan is home to approximately 50,000 Palestinians who face an increasingly restricted living environment.

The “City of David” Project

The demolitions are connected to an Israeli development project known as the “City of David,” an underground archaeological and tourist attraction being developed in Silwan. The project is operated by Elad, also known as the Ir David Foundation, a settler organization established in 1986.

The development initiative has been central to Israeli expansion efforts in the Palestinian neighborhood.

Broader Eviction Threat

The situation in Silwan reflects a wider policy affecting Palestinians throughout the area. More than 2,200 Palestinians south of the Old City face eviction orders based on an Israeli legal framework allowing Jewish interests to reclaim properties allegedly owned before Israel’s establishment in 1948.

This policy has created widespread uncertainty among the Palestinian population, with hundreds at risk of losing their homes and land through legal claims stretching back decades.
