Minzal Celebrates Saudi Heritage Through Culture and Experiences in Diriyah
In the historic heart of Diriyah, a seasonal celebration is quietly doing the vital work of preservation. Minzal, returning for another year, has become more than an event; it is a living classroom, a warm gathering, and a hands-on journey into the soul of Saudi heritage. This season, it places a special focus on the social fabric itself, weaving together the timeless etiquette, crafts, and values known as “Sloum Al-Arab.”
The Heart of Hospitality: “Sloum Al-Arab” and Coffee
At its core, Sloum Al-Arab represents the unwritten code that has guided Bedouin and Arab society for generations—generosity, courage, respect, and profound hospitality. At Minzal, this philosophy is felt most intimately in the rituals surrounding Saudi coffee.
In the dedicated Sloum tent, the air is rich with the aroma of roasting beans. Under the guidance of experts like Ahmed Al-Shuaibi, visitors witness the meticulous process, from roasting to grinding with cardamom and saffron in a traditional Nigr. “Coffee is passed from our grandparents,” Al-Shuaibi notes, emphasizing that this is the authentic beverage of welcome in any significant majlis. This corner is a bridge, ensuring young generations can learn and carry forward this sacred symbol of generosity.
Crafts With a Story: The Timeless Art of Leather
The commitment to tangible heritage shines in the craft workshops. Among the oldest traditions still practiced in the Kingdom, leatherworking takes center stage. Trainer Nada Samman speaks passionately about the material’s nuances, from supple goat leather to the tougher, revered camel hide.
“The work on leather is wonderful,” she shares, highlighting the goal of the workshops: to let visitors spend time on something “useful and fun.” It’s an invitation to slow down, create with one’s hands, and connect with a craft that has served nomadic life for centuries. Visual artist Faisal Al-Khaled echoes this mission, hoping each visitor leaves with a unique, self-made traditional piece, fostering a personal link to preservation.
Strength and Focus: The Legacy of Archery
Beyond the tents, the spirit of tradition finds dynamic expression in archery. Certified coach Mohammed Al-Sharif connects the sport directly to the deep roots of Arab and Islamic culture, historically essential for protection and hunting. “Our traditional bow is considered one of the most important and widely used bows in Arab culture,” he explains, detailing styles from horseback to standing archery.
At Minzal, this is not just a demonstration but an engagement with history, allowing the values of focus, discipline, and strength to resonate with a new generation.
A Living, Evolving Tradition
As the sun sets over Diriyah, Minzal’s essence comes fully alive: the gathering around campfires for dinner and stargazing, the shared stories, the hands stained from leather dye, and the scent of freshly poured coffee. It is an experience that refuses to let heritage become a museum exhibit. Instead, it insists that these norms, skills, and sports are vibrant, relevant, and waiting to be touched, learned, and lived.
Minzal, evolving gracefully with each season, masterfully proves that culture is not just remembered—it is practiced, shared, and celebrated, ensuring the soul of Sloum Al-Arab continues to beat strongly for generations to come.
