Rising Tensions in the Middle East After Italy Closes Embassy in Tehran
ROME — Italy has temporarily closed its embassy in Tehran and relocated personnel to Azerbaijan, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced Thursday, citing security concerns amid the widening conflict in the Middle East.
“We have decided for security reasons to temporarily close our embassy in Tehran, and move the personnel to Baku,” Tajani told journalists at the Senate.
His spokesman confirmed the closure to AFP but stressed that Italy “has not broken off diplomatic relations” with Iran.
The decision follows the launch of war by the United States and Israel against Iran on Saturday, which prompted retaliatory strikes by Tehran across the region.
Explosions were heard in Tehran on Thursday morning, according to Iranian news agency Tasnim.
Italy becomes the latest nation to adjust its diplomatic presence in the region as the conflict expands beyond Iran’s borders. The embassy closure reflects growing concerns among foreign governments about the safety of personnel stationed in Tehran.
The move comes amid a broader pattern of escalation that has drawn in multiple countries and disrupted normal operations across the Gulf region.
