JERUSALEM — Israeli authorities have determined that human remains handed over by Hamas on Tuesday do not belong to either of the two remaining hostages believed to be held in Gaza, the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed on Wednesday.

Forensic experts conducted an immediate examination after the militant group transferred the remains through an intermediary. The analysis concluded that the remains were not those of the hostages whose return Israel had hoped for.

The discovery underscores the painful uncertainty still faced by the families of hostages taken during the October 7 attacks, and complicates ongoing efforts to secure their release through diplomatic and humanitarian channels.

No further details regarding the identity or origin of the remains were immediately disclosed by Israeli officials.
