Israel Confirms Bird Flu Outbreak at Farm in Northern Region
  • PublishedJanuary 6, 2026

Israeli authorities have confirmed the country’s first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) in a year. The outbreak was detected in a flock of 2,000 ducks at a farm in the village of Sde Yaakov, located in northern Israel.

According to a report from Israeli officials to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), the virus caused the death of 90 birds. As a standard precautionary measure to contain any further spread, the remaining birds in the flock were culled. This decisive action follows established international protocols for managing such outbreaks.

The H5N1 strain is a serious concern for poultry industries and governments worldwide. In recent years, the global spread of this virus has led to severe losses for poultry farms, disrupting supply chains and contributing to higher food prices. Beyond the economic impact, experts maintain ongoing vigilance due to the potential, though rare, risk of transmission to humans.

While this is an isolated incident in Israel for now, its occurrence is a stark reminder of the persistent and borderless nature of avian influenza. The situation underscores the critical importance of robust monitoring systems on farms and rapid response protocols to protect both animal and public health.

Farmers and veterinary services in the region are now on heightened alert. Consumers can be reassured that standard safety measures, including the safe disposal of affected flocks and strict controls on moving poultry, are being implemented to manage the risk.
