TEHRAN – Iran announced Friday would mark the final day of Ramadan, with Eid Al-Fitr celebrations beginning Saturday following lunar observations that confirmed the crescent moon sighting.

The office of Iran’s supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei released the announcement, stating that Friday would be the 30th day of the blessed month of Ramadan. Mojtaba was named supreme leader this month following his father Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s assassination in an airstrike at the start of the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran, which Iranian officials have labeled the “Ramadan war.”

Iraq’s top Shia cleric, Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani, echoed the announcement, confirming the same dates for the majority-Shia nation. The timing of Eid Al-Fitr is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon in accordance with the Muslim lunar calendar, making the exact date dependent on astronomical observation.

This year, the final day of Ramadan coincides with Nowruz, the Persian New Year celebrated on the spring equinox, creating an unusual overlap of two major observances for Iranians.

Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, requiring hundreds of millions of Muslims worldwide to fast from sunrise to sunset throughout the month. Believers abstain from eating, drinking, smoking, and intimate relations during daylight hours. The tradition also encourages observant Muslims to donate to the poor and engage in spiritual reflection.

Eid Al-Fitr, meaning “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” marks the conclusion of the fasting period and is celebrated with prayer, family gatherings, feasts, and gift-giving. The holiday typically lasts multiple days and represents one of the most significant occasions in the Islamic calendar.
