ACWA Announces Major Agreement for Ammonia Supply Route to Germany
  • PublishedFebruary 2, 2026

A landmark agreement is set to create a vital energy bridge between two pivotal economies. Saudi utility leader ACWA Power has signed a major memorandum of understanding with German energy giants Energie Baden-Württemberg AG (EnBW), Rostock Port, and Verbundnetz Gas AG (VNG) to establish a new green ammonia export corridor from Saudi Arabia to Germany.

Witnessed by Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman and Germany’s Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Katherina Reiche, the deal underscores a strategic partnership aimed at securing clean energy for Europe’s largest economy while cementing Saudi Arabia’s role in the global renewable energy transition.

The Path of a Green Molecule

The corridor outlines a clear, integrated supply chain:

  1. Production in Yanbu: ACWA Power, with support from EnBW, is developing a major green hydrogen and ammonia production facility in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, targeting commercial operation by 2030.
  2. Export to Rostock: Green ammonia produced in Yanbu will be shipped to Rostock Port in Germany, where Rostock Port will serve as the strategic European hub.
  3. Conversion and Injection: VNG will develop an ammonia “cracker” near the port to convert the imported green ammonia back into green hydrogen, which will then be injected into Germany’s national core gas grid.

This seamless chain is designed to deliver green hydrogen—a crucial fuel for decarbonizing heavy industry and transportation—at scale to German customers.

A Strategic Leap for Energy Security and Decarbonization

The agreement represents more than a simple trade deal. It is a strategic move with multiple layers of significance:

  • For Germany: It establishes a reliable, long-term supply route for green hydrogen, essential for meeting national climate targets and decarbonizing sectors that are difficult to electrify directly, such as steel and chemical manufacturing.
  • For Saudi Arabia: It leverages the Kingdom’s abundant solar and wind resources to produce and export a high-value, clean energy commodity. This accelerates ACWA Power’s global renewable expansion and directly supports Saudi Arabia’s vision to become a key player in the future clean energy landscape.
  • For the Global Market: It demonstrates a practical, large-scale model for international green hydrogen trade, proving that energy-rich nations can become exporters of renewable power and help accelerate global decarbonization efforts.

A Foundation for Broader Partnership

This energy corridor aligns with a broader push to strengthen Saudi-German economic ties. Concurrent meetings between Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, Bandar Alkhorayef, and Minister Reiche explored deepening investment partnerships in industry and mining, highlighting Saudi Arabia’s competitive advantages—from strategic location and competitive energy prices to a streamlined business environment.

As ACWA Power CEO Marco Arcelli noted, this partnership leverages the Yanbu hub to “deliver scale for Europe’s hydrogen needs.” By creating an integrated, efficient supply chain, this collaboration moves the vision of a global green hydrogen economy from blueprint to reality, building a bridge of clean energy that promises to enhance energy security, foster economic growth, and advance climate goals for both nations.
