Trump, Rubio Consider Removing US Envoy to Greece Over Misconduct Allegations
WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are considering removing US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle after claims of unethical and perhaps illegal behaviour before and during her term.
A senior US official said Sunday that Trump and Rubio are “extremely pissed off” at Guilfoyle’s reported behaviour and will likely decide what to do this week following Columbus Day.
The official, who asked to remain anonymous, said Rubio was particularly angry because he visited Athens last week and Guilfoyle attended most, if not all, of his events and greeted him with a bear hug as the allegations swirled.
In several stories, The Wall Street Journal has accused Guilfoyle of threatening a host country official, accepting improper gifts and services, and offering to use her influence in the administration for a large credit card bill.
Guilfoyle has not commented on the reports, but her lawyer has denied wrongdoing and the US Embassy in Athens has supported her.
Rubio has not commented on the charges after defending Guilfoyle after the first report. On Wednesday, Rubio remarked, “Our ambassador has been a strong ambassador here.”
