Defeat of Housing Measures Sparks Fresh Protest Plans Across Spain
A Russian strike targeted a major bridge in Kyiv on Saturday, the city’s mayor said, in the latest attack on Ukrainian infrastructure to bring traffic chaos to the capital.
The strike on the Northern Bridge, which followed a drone alert, came a day after the Southern Bridge was hit in a wave of attacks that city officials say is tearing Kyiv apart. The broader conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, has largely centered on ground fighting in the east, leaving Kyiv mostly spared from the destruction seen closer to the frontline, though that has shifted in recent months.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed on Telegram that the Northern Bridge had been hit, saying emergency services were heading to the scene. In a follow-up update, he said the strike damaged the road surface and trolleybus overhead wires on the bridge, and that traffic from the left bank to the right bank was currently blocked.
The latest strike adds to a series of attacks on crossings over the Dnipro River that connect the eastern and western halves of the capital. On Friday, authorities closed the Southern Bridge, one of Kyiv’s main crossings, and restricted movement on another following a wave of strikes by fast-moving, jet-powered drones, causing severe traffic congestion across the city. Long lines of stationary cars and buses clogged major roads as commuters searched for alternate routes, with some forced to continue on foot.
The Southern Bridge is one of eight crossings linking the two sides of Kyiv. The cable-stayed structure had already been struck multiple times since Thursday, according to city officials. Klitschko warned Friday that the capital should now be treated as being on a war footing.
