Syria Detains Suspected Hezbollah Cell in Daraa Over Rocket Attack Plot

Three people have been accused by Syrian Security Forces of being members of a Hezbollah-linked cell, involved in planning rocket attacks in the southern province of Daraa, according to authorities on Tuesday.

Hours before Tuesday’s announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there were ” indications” that Israeli enemies might try to harm or attack before the elections, which are scheduled in late October.

Authorities stated that the rocket launchers have been fully dismantled, the investigation is ongoing, and the suspects will be handed over to the judicial authorities. They did not provide any information about the targets of the attacks that were reportedly being planned.

According to Syria’s Interior Ministry, the group was attempting to set up rocket launchers for attacks intended to “destabilise security and stability” in the area. Security forces dismantled the launch platforms, while investigations into the suspects are continuing before they are referred to judicial authorities.

Hezbollah Denies Connection

The Syrian authorities described the detainees as members of a Hezbollah-linked cell. However, Hezbollah disputed the alleged affiliation, saying it had no connection with those arrested.

On Wednesday, the Lebanese group released a statement categorically rejecting the allegations and saying that it had no security or military activities in Syria. It also asked Syrian authorities to investigate what it described as attempts to create tensions between Syria and Lebanon.

In recent weeks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz have repeatedly warned Iran and Hezbollah that they would retaliate in the event of any attack.

Following the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad and his government in December 2024, Syria’s new authorities have repeatedly stated that they will not allow Syrian territory to be used for arms smuggling or any other activity that poses a threat to Syria or neighbouring countries.
