110 Detained as Turkiye Steps Up Action Against Daesh Networks

Turkish authorities have significantly escalated operations against suspected Daesh networks, detaining 110 individuals in a sweeping nationwide raid on Tuesday. This large-scale action comes just one day after a deadly confrontation in northwest Türkiye, where three police officers and six militants were killed in a gunfight, underscoring the heightened tensions and determined response.

The latest police operation targeted 114 addresses across Istanbul and two additional provinces, leading to the arrest of the vast majority of suspects sought. According to the Istanbul Chief Prosecutor’s office, authorities seized various digital materials and documents during the raids, indicating a focus on disrupting planning and communication channels.

Tuesday’s detentions follow an intense eight-hour siege at a house in the town of Yalova earlier in the week, which left eight police officers and a security force member wounded. That raid was part of a separate wave of operations targeting more than 100 locations, linked to alleged plots for attacks during the Christmas and New Year period.

This renewed crackdown reflects a broader, urgent effort by Türkiye as Daesh shows signs of renewed activity globally. Recent events—from a U.S. strike against the group in Nigeria to the Daesh-inspired attack at a Bondi Beach Hanukkah event in Sydney—have highlighted its persistent threat. Türkiye itself carries the memory of a severe wave of Daesh-linked violence between 2015 and 2017, which included deadly assaults on Istanbul’s main airport and a nightclub.

Once a key transit route for foreign fighters into Syria, Türkiye has conducted regular security operations against the group in the years since. The scale of this week’s actions, however, signals a decisive step to preempt any resurgence, aiming to dismantle logistical networks before they can translate plots into violence. As the global threat landscape evolves, these operations mark Türkiye’s continued frontline role in a complex and enduring security challenge.
